TRUE LOVE

Analysis

“Let’s put our heads together and analyze the situation.”

Silence.

Silence, not from any solace that could be found— or even mustered by any effort with the best of intentions or the greatest hopes and aspirations. It was silence suppressed by every fear, tension, and expectation built up by frustrated human emotions.

Jose Lirio could feel the tension. He knew he was lacking when it came to expressing the full spectrum of human emotions. After all, what man didn’t feel inadequate in that department? In fact, he even wondered if he was capable of simply and correctly expressing the most basic of human emotions at all.

Like love, for instance.

He knew that he loved Marisol. She was the sun, moon and stars to him. He couldn’t explain it. Jose certainly couldn’t express some things openly and honestly, but he thought he was doing the best he could in that area. Apparently, Marisol didn’t feel that he was doing all he could to express it, of course, and that’s why they were at counseling in the first place.

On the brighter side, however, the guardedness that had placed him in so much hot water with his wife, was also a blessing for Jose. It kept him from just blurting things out that would get him into more trouble. Take Dr. Bustamante, for instance. From a purely physical standpoint, Jose found the doctor much more beautiful and far more attractive than his own wife. Yet, he wouldn’t just come out and say such a thing. Moreover, Jose truly loved his wife with something that was deep, yet at the same time, exalted. He knew the difference between his love for Marisol and some base and primal instinct that might tempt him away from her.

“Doctor,” said Marisol, “sometimes I feel I don’t know him.”

“Don’t tell me. Tell him.”

“How can I, doctor, when I don’t even know who he is?”

“Would you like to respond to that?” the doctor asked Jose.

“No one knows me like she does, doctor.”

“Tell her.”

“My love, no one knows me like you.”

“You go out at night.”

“I work at night.”

“See that, doctor. He goes out.”

“It’s a good job,” said Jose, matter-of-factly.

“What do you do, Jose?” asked the doctor.

“I’m a crime scene forensic investigator with the PNP. I work Metro Manila Robbery and Homicide Division.”

Dr. Bustamante wrote in her tablet. “You’re right. That is a good job.”

“You cheat.”

“I don’t cheat on you. Doctor, I don’t cheat on her.”

“Marisol, why would you say Jose cheats on you.”

“Because he goes out at night.” Marisol was getting heated and animated. She fidgeted in her chair.

“Marisol,” said the doctor, “we already know that the reason he goes out at night is because of his job.”

“To meet her— at his job?”

Jose felt tired all over. “Who?”

“The one that looks like that actress, Dawn—”

“Zamora?” Jose couldn’t help it. He laughed.

“I brought him dinner one night and there she was— his co-worker that looked just like Dawn Zamora.”

“My love, that was Dawn Zamora.”

“You’re cheating on me with Dawn Zamora?” Marisol exclaimed.

“No, my love. She came by the station to thank the Chief after her home was robbed.
